Located in the heart of Illinois, Peoria is the largest city on the Illinois River and is midway between Chicago and St. Louis. Peoria offers big-city amenities with a smaller town feel. Peoria has major shopping opportunities, its own symphony and ballet, Broadway Theater League, museums, art guilds, a sculpture walk, professional sports teams, many high school state championship tournaments, first-class medical facilities, and an international airport. The repurposed riverfront, a mixed-use, urban neighborhood, features restaurants, renovated loft apartments, retail, offices, and festivals and celebrations ranging from music to culture to sports to a fine arts fair to the spectacular Red, White and Boom!, the largest fireworks celebration in Illinois.
Peoria is also home to the USDA National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research. NCAUR invents new industrial and food products from agricultural commodities, develops new technologies to improve environmental quality, and provides technical support to Federal regulatory and action agencies. Peoria's major employment sectors include Manufacturing, Healthcare, Education, Insurance, Government, Finance, Leisure and hospitality. Major employers in Peoria include Caterpillar Inc, Peoria Public Schools, OSF Healthcare, OSF St. Francis Medical Center, and Methodist Medical Center.
Peoria Public Schools serves approximately 13,300 students in 27 schools. The students represent diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In November 2016, the voters of Peoria County approved a ½% sales tax to benefit the school districts in the county. Proceeds of this tax will begin to flow to the school districts in the Fall of 2017 and may only be used for building improvements, land acquisition, or property tax relief.
The Peoria Teacher Education Pipeline, a branch of the National Center for Urban Education, will provide Induction and Mentoring to recently-hired PPS teachers who are ISU graduates. PTEP will also offer STEP-UP (Summer Teacher Education Partnership for Urban Preparation), a 4-week teaching and community internship and summer residency program for pre-service teachers from Illinois State University, beginning in the summer of 2018.
